Car insurance in Illinois

We write car insurance across Illinois from our Chicagoland office. Tell us about your car once and we compare the same coverage across multiple carriers, then explain the difference in plain English.

Illinois minimums

What Illinois requires.

Every car driven or registered in Illinois has to carry liability insurance, and every policy has to include uninsured motorist coverage. These are the minimums.

  • Liability. $25,000 for injury to one person, $50,000 for all injuries in one accident and $20,000 for damage to other people's property.
  • Uninsured motorist. $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for your injuries when the driver at fault has no insurance.

Why the minimum may not be enough

The minimums are what the law requires, not what a serious accident costs. Medical bills and newer cars can run well past these limits, and if you cause a crash that costs more than your coverage, you can be personally responsible for the rest. We quote higher limits side by side so you can see what the extra protection costs before you decide.

What Illinois drivers often add

  • Collision. Repairs to your own car after a crash, whoever is at fault. Lenders usually require it on financed and leased cars.
  • Comprehensive. Theft, vandalism, hail, flooding, animal strikes and broken glass.
  • Higher liability limits. More protection if you cause a serious accident, with an umbrella policy available above them.
  • Medical payments. Helps with medical bills for you and your passengers, whoever is at fault.
  • Roadside and rental. Towing when the car won't go, and a rental while yours is in the shop.
  • Gap coverage. For a financed or leased car: what you would still owe after a total loss.

Common questions

What is the minimum car insurance in Illinois?

Liability of 25/50/20: $25,000 for injury to one person, $50,000 for all injuries in one accident and $20,000 for property damage, plus uninsured motorist coverage of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident.

Do I need insurance to register a car in Illinois?

Yes. Illinois law requires liability insurance on any car that is driven or registered in the state, and police can ask for proof at a traffic stop or after an accident.

Do you write policies outside Chicago?

Yes. We write auto policies anywhere in Illinois, and in Indiana and Texas too. Quotes and service happen by phone, text and email.

Is the Illinois minimum enough?

It meets the law, but it may not cover a serious accident. Medical bills and newer cars can cost far more than $25,000 or $20,000, and if you cause a crash that costs more than your limits, you can be personally responsible for the rest. We quote higher limits side by side so you can see what they cost.
