Car insurance in Indiana

We write car insurance in Indiana. Tell us about your car once and we compare the same coverage across multiple carriers, then explain the difference in plain English.

Indiana minimums

What Indiana requires.

Indiana requires liability coverage on every car on its roads. New policies also include uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage unless you reject it in writing.

  • Liability. $25,000 for injury to one person, $50,000 for all injuries in one accident and $25,000 for property damage.
  • Uninsured motorist. At least $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for injuries, and $25,000 for property damage, unless you reject it in writing.
  • Underinsured motorist. At least $50,000 for injuries, unless you reject it in writing.

Indiana Code 9-25-4-5 and 27-7-5-2

Why the minimum may not be enough

The minimums are what the law requires, not what a serious accident costs. Medical bills and newer cars can run well past these limits, and if you cause a crash that costs more than your coverage, you can be personally responsible for the rest. We quote higher limits side by side so you can see what the extra protection costs before you decide.

What Indiana drivers often add

  • Collision. Repairs to your own car after a crash, whoever is at fault. Lenders usually require it on financed and leased cars.
  • Comprehensive. Theft, vandalism, hail, flooding, animal strikes and broken glass.
  • Higher liability limits. More protection if you cause a serious accident, with an umbrella policy available above them.
  • Medical payments. Helps with medical bills for you and your passengers, whoever is at fault.
  • Roadside and rental. Towing when the car won't go, and a rental while yours is in the shop.
  • Gap coverage. For a financed or leased car: what you would still owe after a total loss.

Common questions

What is the minimum car insurance in Indiana?

Liability of 25/50/25: $25,000 for injury to one person, $50,000 for all injuries in one accident and $25,000 for property damage.

Is uninsured motorist coverage required in Indiana?

New Indiana policies must include uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage unless you reject it in writing. It protects you when the driver at fault has no insurance or not enough, so think carefully before turning it down.

I'm moving between Illinois and Indiana. What happens to my policy?

Tell us before you move. Your policy has to meet the rules of the state where the car is registered, and prices change with the ZIP code where it's parked, so it's a good time to compare carriers again.

Is the Indiana minimum enough?

It meets the law, but it may not cover a serious accident. Medical bills and newer cars can cost far more than $25,000 or $25,000, and if you cause a crash that costs more than your limits, you can be personally responsible for the rest. We quote higher limits side by side so you can see what they cost.
