Umbrella insurance
An umbrella adds $1 million or more of liability coverage above your auto and home limits, for the lawsuit that would otherwise reach your savings, your home equity or your future wages.
What it covers
- Liability above your auto, home, boat and rental property limits
- Defense costs for covered claims
- Claims underlying policies may not cover, such as libel or slander
- Family members in your household
Common add-ons
- Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage on the umbrella
- Excess limits above $1 million
Who it's for
Homeowners with equity or savings, families with teen drivers, pool or trampoline owners, dog owners, landlords, and anyone who serves on a board.
Common questions
How much does an umbrella cost?
Less than most people expect, because it sits above policies that already carry the first dollars of a claim. The premium depends on how many cars, homes and drivers it covers.
Do I need to raise my auto limits first?
Usually yes. Umbrella carriers require minimum underlying limits, commonly $250,000/$500,000 on auto. We line those up when we quote.
