Car insurance in Texas

We write car insurance in Texas. Tell us about your car once and we compare the same coverage across multiple carriers, then explain the difference in plain English.

Texas minimums

What Texas requires.

Texas requires liability coverage of at least 30/60/25 on every car. Personal injury protection and uninsured motorist coverage also come with the policy unless you turn them down in writing.

  • Liability. $30,000 for injury to one person, $60,000 for all injuries in one accident and $25,000 for property damage.
  • Personal injury protection. Included on every Texas policy unless you reject it in writing. It helps pay medical bills and lost wages for you and your passengers, whoever caused the crash.
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist. Insurers have to offer it, and it stays on the policy unless you reject it in writing.

Why the minimum may not be enough

The minimums are what the law requires, not what a serious accident costs. Medical bills and newer cars can run well past these limits, and if you cause a crash that costs more than your coverage, you can be personally responsible for the rest. We quote higher limits side by side so you can see what the extra protection costs before you decide.

What Texas drivers often add

  • Collision. Repairs to your own car after a crash, whoever is at fault. Lenders usually require it on financed and leased cars.
  • Comprehensive. Theft, vandalism, hail, flooding, animal strikes and broken glass.
  • Higher liability limits. More protection if you cause a serious accident, with an umbrella policy available above them.
  • Roadside and rental. Towing when the car won't go, and a rental while yours is in the shop.
  • Gap coverage. For a financed or leased car: what you would still owe after a total loss.

Liability of 30/60/25: $30,000 for injury to one person, $60,000 for all injuries in one accident and $25,000 for property damage.

Do I have to buy PIP in Texas?

Every Texas auto policy includes personal injury protection unless you tell the insurance company in writing that you don't want it.

Insurance companies have to offer it. If you don't want it, you have to reject it in writing. It protects you when the driver at fault has no insurance or not enough.

Your office is near Chicago. Can you still help in Texas?

Yes. We write auto policies in Texas as well as Illinois and Indiana, and quotes and service happen by phone, text and email.

Is the Texas minimum enough?

It meets the law, but it may not cover a serious accident. Medical bills and newer cars can cost far more than $30,000 or $25,000, and if you cause a crash that costs more than your limits, you can be personally responsible for the rest. We quote higher limits side by side so you can see what they cost.
