Renters insurance

Your landlord's policy covers the building. Renters insurance covers everything you moved in with, plus liability if someone is hurt or you damage the unit.

What it covers

  • Personal property: furniture, electronics, clothing and bikes, even when they are in your car or a storage unit
  • Personal liability if a guest is injured or you damage a neighbor's unit
  • Loss of use: hotel costs if a fire or burst pipe makes your apartment unlivable
  • Medical payments to guests

Common add-ons

  • Scheduled items for engagement rings and cameras
  • Identity theft recovery
  • Water backup

Who it's for

Tenants in apartments, condos, houses and student housing, and anyone whose lease requires proof of coverage.

Common questions

Is renters insurance required?

Illinois does not require it, but many landlords do as a lease condition. Either way, it is one of the least expensive policies we write and often earns a discount when bundled with auto.

Does it cover my roommate?

Usually not. Each adult should carry a policy unless the carrier allows a roommate to be listed.

How much coverage do I need?

Add up what it would cost to replace everything you own. Most renters are surprised the number is well past $20,000.
